Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to pursue her artistic talents and be instilled by art. DuVernay worked as a night nurse, allowing her aunt time that she required during the day for the love of art, literature and theatre. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art was an avenue for action. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a strong social conscience and advised DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights marches that were historic over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was still at the college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to sit at the home of one of the jurors of the jury, and then examine their junk. The jury member was unhappy with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right after college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of networks for promotion and lifestyle such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
